A 1936-38 Jensen steam engine (flywheels from a later models are used in this video) runs a small generator that puts out the 3VDC needed to run a Gameboy color.
Now all he has to do is replace the chips with tubes, and I'll be happy!

Sun, October 1, 2006 - 7:26 PMThese rock. That frenchy-one is super neat, but I bet it could be painful. It also looks badly balanced.

Re: SteamBoy (from Ninetendo)
Sun, October 1, 2006 - 7:28 PMAnd.. I've replied to the wrong post.
The SteamBoy, i thought, would be a reference to the darned movie that came out a year or two ago. Instead I get this bit of MakeBlog geekery, welcome though it is. I'd hate to have that goof for a roomate though! -

Re: SteamBoy (from Ninetendo)
Mon, October 2, 2006 - 6:30 AMThere's a thread around here somewhere related to the movie. Or it's on the (sadly neglected) blog, at any rate.
That's why I chose the title for this thread.
I saw the film a couple of months back; It was Neat, but disappointing. Weird use of names. -

Re: SteamBoy (from Ninetendo)
Mon, October 23, 2006 - 4:09 AMI am not well-versed in electrical matters, but i wonder: wouldn't a wimshurst machine or similar crank-powered electrostatic generator work for powering a gameboy as well?
This raises another question: if so, how to keep the machine going at a steady rate so it provides consistent power? the answer that springs to my mind is something along the lines of the spring in an old watch, that could turn the generator at a steady rate, effectively making it a wind-up Gameboy rather than a steam gameboy. -

Re: SteamBoy (from Ninetendo)
Thu, June 12, 2008 - 9:21 AMI don't think a wimshurst would be able to generate enough power.
There's been a lot of discussion in the OLPC XO wikis and groups about solar and other alternative energy sources. takes a lot of energy....
Or course, a gameboy uses LESS power than an entire laptop.... -

Game Boy Color reads games from Floppies, instead of cartridges.
you know, BECAUSE IT CAN.
